Milner Library is a congressionally designated Federal Depository Library providing free public access to government information to Illinois State University and the general public, specifically the 13th Congressional District. Milner Library is also a member of the Illinois Documents Depository Program. Together the federal and state government collections support the curricular and research needs of the University and community with up-to-date and historic resources reflecting all aspects of government activity.
Government information includes primary and secondary sources covering a wide range of subjects such as art, business, criminal justice, education, energy, environment, international relations, health, labor, laws and regulations, nutrition, and science and technology. They encompass a variety of formats including books, journals and magazines, maps, posters, and kits. The Federal Government Documents collection is located on the fourth floor of Milner Library.
Public access to the Government Documents Collection is guaranteed by public law (Title 44 United States Code). Anyone can visit federal depository libraries and use the federal depository collections. Government information can be located by searching the Library Catalog or Government Information Library Guide. Community residents may apply for a Courtesy Card to checkout government documents.
The Government Documents Librarian provides reference services and research consultations in-person, over the telephone, by email, via chat and text, or through mail.
The Government Documents Librarian is available for instruction sessions, workshops and presentations covering a wide variety of topics including public policy, legislation, census, statistics and data, and primary sources.
