This collection of over 50 World War I posters in Milner Library’s Government Information Collection illustrates the demands and needs of a global war. Federal agencies and national organizations created these posters after the United States entered the war in 1917 to educate the public and enlist support for the war. The most effective posters quickly informed and compelled individuals to support the war effort with such activities as contributing to Victory Loan drives, knitting socks for the Red Cross, donating books and magazines to soldiers, sponsoring orphans overseas, or conserving food and fuel. These posters also represent that era’s design and printing techniques.
Ange. V. Milner, Illinois State University's first full-time librarian, collected and preserved these posters. Today, Government Information maintains the print collection on the fourth floor of Milner Library. Please contact Angela Bonnell, Head of Government Information, to view the posters or to request more information.
This digital collection was previously titled Answering the Call: World War I Posters.
