Outstanding College Researcher Award

This award recognizes faculty whose research is acknowledged at the national or international level for its quality and contribution to the profession or discipline.

2011 Award Winner

Professor Vanette Schwartz was selected as the recipient of the 2011 Outstanding College Researcher Award for Milner Library in recognition of her scholarly contributions to both Illinois State University and the field of librarianship.

Among Professor Schwartz’s many contributions are her efforts to fund library resources by winning competitive grants, which have greatly improved our collections, exhibits and curriculum. This in turn has assisted faculty and benefited our students.

Milner Library and the University have been greatly rewarded by Professor Schwartz’s dedication and service over the last 33 years.  As an Associate Professor and the library’s Social Science and Maps librarian, she has subject responsibilities in History, Social Work, Sociology, and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Professor Schwartz’s work on ISU’s Faculty Publications Database is particularly notable. Currently in its tenth year, this research project began with the ambitious goal of creating a comprehensive bibliography of all publications by faculty members of ISNU and ISU from 1857, the year the university was founded, to the present. She is one of the original co-principal investigators and, as a colleague states, she has provided the “critical leadership” necessary to maintain this project’s momentum. The compilation of the first 100 years of faculty publications was completed in time for Illinois State’s 150th Anniversary celebration, and the database was listed prominently on the University’s website throughout its sesquicentennial 2007-2008.

Professor Sharon NaylorProfessor Sharon Naylor is Milner Library's inaugural recipient of the Outstanding College Researcher Award.

Professor Naylor's work is nationally recognized for her significant contributions to four of the most important library reference titles acquired by academic libraries. Sharon was invited to serve as the subject-expert editor for the “History of Education” section in the premier core list for academic libraries, Resources for College Libraries, successor to Books for College Libraries. She also serves as a contributor for the “Education” section in the internationally recognized Guide to Reference Sources. She continues her longstanding contributions for the subject area of “Disabilities” in the essential library title, Magazines for Libraries — impressively ranging from the 9th to the present 18th edition.

Most recently, she has been asked to serve as editor for the “Higher Education” chapter for the Greenwood Dictionary of Education, an upcoming title in a series of highly respected reference titles published by Greenwood Press. Her involvement with these prestigious reference works is a testament to her prominence in the field and the respect she has earned nationally.
