Center for Preservation and Conversation

Milner Library's Center for Conservation and Preservation provides Illinois Libraries with a variety of preservationally sound treatments on a cost-recovery basis. Under the direction of the Preservation Department, the Center maintains the staff, materials, and equipment necessary to perform treatments that meet or exceed national standards for library preservation at a cost far lower than most commercial vendors.

Services and Treatments Provided

Center staff has the equipment and expertise to perform the following treatments:

  • Re-sew bindings
  • Reattach loose pages
  • Repair paper
  • Repair/replace spine
  • Case/recase
  • Tighten hinges
  • Bind unbound materials
  • Perform encapsulation
  • Bind pamphlets

Other services may be available upon request.

Treatments can be initiated by contacting the center via email or by telephone at (309) 438-7463. Conservation Center staff will respond to requests within one week. The Center accepts up to five items from an individual library at any one time, and owning libraries will be provided with a time and cost estimate before treatment begins.

The Center for Conservation and Preservation began as a result of grant funding provided by the Illinois State Library (ISL), using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
